Ecuador is a small country that straddles the equator. Quito, its capital, sits at an elevation of some 9300 feet. A city of great colonial and pre-Columbian charm, it has some excellent Inca ruins. While we stayed in Quito for a few days, it was not our primary objective: We used it as our gateway to the Galapagos Islands, some 600 miles offshore.
We took 591 digital pictures in Ecuador.

Map Overview of the Galapagos Trip

Our trip to Ecuador included Quito, its capital city, and the outlying islands of the Galapagos. We flew to Quito from Miami. Quito lies on the equator.

In the left picture, I am standing in front of the equatorial monument, La Mitad del Mundo (the center of the world). The next picture is of the two of us at the same site.  This historic site, while impressive, is not on the actual equator. GPS measurements place the real equator some few meters away, with a much more humble marker.

Gargoyle detail of Quito's San Francisco Cathedral. Note that the gargoyles are Galapagos Tortoises.

In the center of Quito is the large cathedral of San Francisco. Here are shots of it and some of its detail. It is worth noting that some of the gargoyles are Galapagos Tortoises (right picture)

Under the cathedral is a cemetery and crypt system that was first used for the bishops, and then for the wealthy.

Perhaps somewhat humorous, here I am using Naimah's head to stabilize a telephoto shot. (Thanks Paula for the picture.)
